Road signs disagree by country
Most of the world posts highway distances in kilometres. The United States (and a few other contexts) still lean on miles. Navigation apps usually localize, but printed guides, race bibs, and rental-car dashboards may not match your instincts.
One international mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres. For trip planning, that exact factor is enough; you rarely need more precision than a tenth of a kilometre or mile.
Confusing km/h with mph is a safety issue, not just a math issue. When you convert distance, also check whether speed limits were converted.
Hiking and running events
Trail races may advertise a “10K” (kilometres) while US training plans talk in miles. Convert the race distance once and rebuild paces in your preferred unit.
Elevation gain is a length too—often in metres or feet. Convert gain separately from horizontal distance; they are different columns in a plan.
GPX tools sometimes default to metres internally. Export settings can silently switch display units; verify the summary totals before sharing a route.
Fuel economy adjacent confusion
Distance units show up inside fuel economy (L/100 km vs mpg). Converting trip length alone does not convert economy figures—those need their own formulas.
When renting a car abroad, note whether the trip computer shows km or miles. Resetting averages mid-trip with the wrong mental unit produces nonsense cost estimates.

Planning checklist
Pick one planning unit for the trip. Convert all legs into that unit. Add buffer for detours. Only then convert a summary into the local road-sign unit if needed.
For mixed groups, publish both km and miles on shared itineraries. Dual totals prevent “how much farther?” arguments in the car.
Keep nautical miles separate for marine and aviation contexts—they are not the same as statute miles.
