Pace is an inverse speed
Runners quote pace as time per distance—minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile. Treadmills usually show speed in km/h or mph. They describe the same motion differently: pace = time / distance; speed = distance / time. Converting requires reciprocals, not a single multiply of the displayed number.
Example bridge: speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h). For miles: speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace (min/mile). Always track whether the pace distance is a kilometre or a mile.
A “5:00 min/km” pace is 12 km/h. A “8:00 min/mile” pace is 7.5 mph. Those are different efforts—convert carefully before you race your training partners’ screenshots.
Treadmill buttons and silent unit switches
Gym treadmills may default to mph in the US and km/h elsewhere. Hitting “10” intending 10 km/h on an mph treadmill is an all-out sprint (~16 km/h). Check the unit indicator every time you start a belt on travel.
Some consoles let you display pace. Confirm whether that pace is per mile or per kilometre. A 6:00 pace sounds easy per mile and brutal per kilometre.
Calibration and belt wear affect true speed slightly. Unit conversion assumes the console’s number is correct; performance testing may need an external check.
Converting metric and US training plans
Plans written in min/km need min/mile for US races (or the reverse). Convert distance first (1 mile = 1.609344 km), then scale the pace time: min/mile ≈ min/km × 1.609344. Example: 5:00 /km ≈ 8:03 /mile.
Alternatively, convert pace to a speed in km/h, convert speed to mph, then convert mph back to min/mile. Use whichever chain produces fewer rounding steps for you.
Interval workouts that mix “400 m repeats” with “mph recovery jogs” need both length and speed converters. Write every line with units before you lace up.
From m/s and race mathematics
Sports science may log m/s. Multiply by 3.6 for km/h, then convert to pace with 60 / (km/h). Example: 3.33 m/s ≈ 12 km/h ≈ 5:00 min/km.
Race finish time ≈ pace × distance when units match. Convert a marathon distance to kilometres or miles to match your pace unit before multiplying. A marathon is 42.195 km or 26.21875 miles—not 42 miles.
Splits on odd distances (5K, 10K, half) are easier in the distance unit printed on the bib. Convert published pace after you fix the distance language.
Incline, effort, and why units still matter
Incline changes effort at the same belt speed. Converting km/h to mph does not adjust for grade. Keep incline notes beside speed/pace notes.
Heart-rate or power targets are independent of unit labels, but the treadmill prescription you programmed is not. Log the unit you actually used.
Group classes calling “level 8.0” without units are ambiguous across equipment. Ask “km/h or mph?” once and save the workout.
Practical workflow
Decide your coaching unit (min/km or min/mile). Convert the session into treadmill speed in the console’s unit. After the run, convert back to pace for the training log so weeks stay comparable.
Dual-label key sessions: “5:30 /km (8:51 /mile) ≈ 10.9 km/h (6.8 mph).” The first time takes a minute; the clarity lasts a season.
Use km/h ↔ mph converters for the speed side and kilometre ↔ mile for distance; apply the 60/pace bridge for the reciprocal relationship.
