Speed limits are unit limits

A number on a white sign means nothing until you know whether it is mph or km/h. Driving 100 in a 100 km/h zone is not the same as driving 100 in a 100 mph zone—the second case is roughly 161 km/h. Tourists who “just match the number” cause genuine danger.

Exact relationship: 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h because the international mile is exactly 1.609344 km and the hour is the same in both units. Conversely, 1 km/h ≈ 0.621371192 mph. For dashboard glances, many drivers remember “multiply mph by 1.6” or “multiply km/h by 0.62,” then refine when planning.

Rental cars may display the other unit, or both. Learn how to switch the cluster before you leave the airport road. Navigation apps usually localize speed limits, but a paper map or temporary work-zone sign might not match your mental default.

Planning ETA when distance units also flip

Trip time is distance divided by average speed—only when both use consistent length units. Mixing a 120 km leg with a 60 mph average without converting yields nonsense. Convert either all distances to miles and speeds to mph, or all to kilometres and km/h.

Average speed on a road trip is far below the posted limit. Use a realistic average (including fuel stops) in one unit system. Convert the posted limit separately when you want to know “how fast am I allowed to go,” not “how fast will I average.”

Common highway anchors

Useful pairs to memorize for signs: 30 mph ≈ 48 km/h (urban); 50 mph ≈ 80 km/h; 60 mph ≈ 97 km/h; 70 mph ≈ 113 km/h; 80 mph ≈ 129 km/h. In the other direction: 50 km/h ≈ 31 mph; 80 km/h ≈ 50 mph; 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph; 120 km/h ≈ 75 mph; 130 km/h ≈ 81 mph.

School zones and temporary limits are where unit mistakes hurt most because the absolute speeds are lower but enforcement and child safety margins are tight. Convert the posted number before you “nudge a little over.”

Adaptive cruise control and speed-limit assist features depend on map data units. If the car was configured for another market, verify the shown limit against roadside signs once, especially after firmware or language changes.

mph, km/h, and metres per second

Science and some vehicle test reports use metres per second. 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h exactly. That bridge is handy: convert m/s → km/h by multiplying by 3.6, then to mph if needed. Crash-test and physics problems almost never want mph as an intermediate.

Dashcams and OBD apps may log SI units internally and display your preference. When exporting a CSV for insurance or coaching, note the unit column. A silent m/s vs km/h swap makes you look ten times too slow or too fast.

Foot per second appears in some US engineering contexts. For road trips you rarely need it; stick to mph and km/h unless a technical report forces the issue.

Weather, tires, and “feels like” speed

Unit conversion does not change stopping distance physics, but mixed mental models do. If you are used to thinking “60 mph needs X metres to stop,” rebuild that intuition in km/h before mountain descents abroad.

Tire speed ratings and placards may list km/h even on US cars. Convert before comparing to your planned cruise speed in mph. The rating is a limit, not a suggestion to drive that fast.

Keep a single sticky note on the dash for the first day abroad: “limits are km/h” or “limits are mph,” plus two anchor conversions you actually saw on the route.

Workflow for a border-crossing day

Set the instrument cluster and phone navigation to the local unit. Convert any handwritten pace notes from home. Recalculate ETA with distance and average speed in one system. Recheck the first three posted limits against your display.

When sharing driving shifts with someone from another country, call out both units for the first hour (“90 km/h, about 56 mph”). Shared speech prevents one driver from “correcting” the other into a ticket.
