A light-year measures distance

A light-year is the distance light travels in vacuum in one Julian year. Despite the word year, it is a length unit, not a time unit. Saying a star is 4 light-years away means its light takes about four years to reach us—and that the path length is that many light-years.

In metres, one light-year is about 9.46 × 10¹⁵ m (roughly 9.46 petametres). In kilometres that is about 9.46 × 10¹² km. The huge size is exactly why astronomers like the unit: galactic distances stay readable.

Confusing light-years with years leads to wrong mental models of age versus distance. A galaxy 100 million light-years away is not necessarily 100 million years old; we see it as it was when the light left, which is a different statement.

How the unit is defined

Light speed in vacuum is exactly 299 792 458 m/s by SI definition of the metre. A Julian year is 365.25 days of 86 400 seconds. Multiply speed by that time interval to get the light-year length used in astronomy.

Because the speed of light is exact in SI, the light-year inherits a precise relationship to the metre once the year convention is fixed. Converters should document which year definition they use; Julian year is the common astronomical choice.

Scale models help: if the Earth–Sun distance is 1 cm, a light-year becomes an awkwardly large classroom length—which itself teaches why astronomers need big units.
