A knot is a nautical mile per hour

One knot means one nautical mile per hour. The international nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres, so 1 knot = 1.852 km/h exactly. In statute (land) miles, 1 knot ≈ 1.15078 mph. Mariners and aviators use knots so speed and chart distance share the same mile definition.

If you convert boat speed into km/h but leave chart legs in nautical miles—or worse, statute miles—your ETA will be wrong. Keep the chain consistent: nautical miles with knots, kilometres with km/h, statute miles with mph.

Historical note: the name comes from counting knots in a line paid out over a sandglass interval. Modern instruments use sensors and GNSS; the unit definition is now fixed by the international nautical mile.

Boating: SOG, STW, and wind

Speed through water (STW) and speed over ground (SOG) can differ because of current. Instruments may show knots for both. When you convert to km/h for a guest display, label which speed you converted—current-adjusted SOG is what gets you to the marina on time.

Wind reports in marine forecasts often use knots. A “20-knot wind” is about 37 km/h or 23 mph. Small-craft advice thresholds are written in knots in many countries; convert only after you understand the category boundaries.

Tide atlases and racing handicaps assume nautical miles and knots. Converting a race course to statute miles without converting the rating math breaks comparisons between seasons and fleets.

Aviation: airspeed in knots

Pilots quote indicated, calibrated, true, and ground speed—often in knots. Those types already differ by instrument and atmosphere effects; unit conversion is a separate step. Convert only when talking to audiences that expect km/h or mph, and name which airspeed type you mean.

Jet streams and ATIS winds are typically in knots. Airport visibility and runway lengths may use metres or feet—different quantities. Do not treat a wind of 15 kt like 15 km/h; that underestimates wind by nearly half.

Flight-planning tools can switch display units. Before a cross-country lesson or sim session, verify the unit field. A silent switch from knots to mph changes every performance number you memorized.

Converting knots cleanly

To km/h: multiply knots by 1.852. To mph: multiply knots by 1.150779448 (approximately). Reverse: divide km/h by 1.852 to get knots. Use a converter when filing plans or writing procedures; use 1.85 as a glance factor only for casual talk.

Car drivers often think in mph or km/h and underestimate boat/aircraft speeds quoted in knots because the numbers look “smaller.” Fifteen knots is not a jogging pace—it is about 28 km/h over ground if SOG matches.

News articles sometimes convert knots to mph incorrectly by using 1.6 (the statute mile factor) instead of about 1.15. When accuracy matters, re-convert from the original knot value.

GPS apps on phones may default to mph based on locale even on a boat. Switch the app to knots or nautical miles when navigating on water so the display matches charts.
