Clocks label moments; durations measure spans

A time zone changes how we label the same instant (“15:00 UTC” vs “11:00 EDT”). A duration unit measures how much time elapses between two instants (3 hours, 180 minutes). Converting 3 hours to minutes never requires a time zone. Scheduling a call across zones never changes how long 3 hours lasts.

Confusion starts when people subtract clock faces in local labels without converting both instants to a common timeline. 22:00 in Paris to 08:00 next day in New York is not “10 hours” of subtraction on the printed numbers alone—you must interpret zones and dates.

Use duration converters for spans. Use time-zone tools or explicit UTC offsets for wall-clock labels. This guide trains you to pick the right tool.

Duration conversions that stay honest

Hours, minutes, seconds, days, and weeks convert among themselves as pure spans: 1 h = 60 min = 3,600 s; 1 d = 24 h; 1 wk = 7 d. Those factors do not care whether you are in Tokyo or Toronto.

Layover math: if landing is at one local time and departure at another, convert both to UTC (or another single offset), subtract to get a duration in seconds or minutes, then format. Do not convert time zones by “adding duration units” blindly.

Work shifts logged as “7.5 hours” are durations. Convert to minutes (450) for payroll systems that want minutes. Time-zone entry only matters for when the shift started, not for how long 7.5 hours is.

Where time zones actually matter

Meeting invites, flight itineraries, and “call me at 3 pm” messages need zone labels (CET, EST, UTC+9, etc.). Ambiguous “3 pm” is social debt. Ambiguous duration (“in 3 hours”) is relative to “now” and still needs a shared understanding of the starting instant.

Daylight saving shifts change civil labels by an hour on specific dates. The underlying duration of a movie does not become 59 minutes because DST started—though a civil midnight-to-midnight “day” can be 23 or 25 hours on transition dates.

APIs should store instants in UTC or with explicit offsets, and store durations in seconds. Display layers apply zones. Mixing display strings into arithmetic is the bug.

Travel examples

A flight that leaves at 17:00 and lands at 19:00 local at the destination may last 8–12 hours depending on zones. Always trust block time (a duration) from the airline for “how long you sit,” and local times for “when to be at the gate.”

Jet lag feelings track circadian clocks, not unit converters. Still, computing elapsed awake time uses duration units: hours since last sleep, minutes of layover.

Train timetables that cross borders print local times per station. Differences require zone-aware subtraction; the resulting travel time is a duration you can convert to minutes for comparisons.

Software and spreadsheet pitfalls

Spreadsheets store datetimes as serial numbers in a timezone-agnostic cell unless you add conventions. Duration cells formatted as time may wrap at 24 hours. Prefer an integer “total minutes” column for long spans.

Programming libraries distinguish Instant/ZonedDateTime from Duration/Period. Convert seconds with duration tools; convert zones with zone databases (IANA). Do not roll your own offset table from memory.

Logging “job took 2:30” without saying h:mm vs hh:mm:ss recreates decimal-hour bugs. ISO-8601 durations (PT2H30M) fix the ambiguity.

Practical rule of thumb

If the question is “how long,” use second/minute/hour/day converters. If the question is “what time is it there,” use zone conversion. If the question is both—“how long until 09:00 in another city”—convert the target instant, then subtract from now as a duration.

Label outputs: “duration 2 h 15 min” vs “09:00 JST.” Clear nouns prevent Slack threads from inventing physics.
