Carpet Area Calculator Workflow

Measure rooms, convert square metres and square feet, add waste, and order carpet or flooring without mixing length and area units.

Area first, then conversion

Carpet and flooring are sold by area—square metres or square feet—not by a single length. The reliable workflow is: measure length and width in one unit → multiply for area → convert area if the seller uses another unit → add waste → round up to pack coverage.

If you convert metres to feet on only one side of a rectangle before multiplying, the area is wrong. If you convert both sides to feet and multiply, you get square feet directly. If you multiply in metres, convert with an area converter. Pick one path and stay on it.

Write units on the sketch: “3.20 m × 4.10 m” or “10 ft 6 in × 13 ft 5 in.” Bare numbers cause expensive callbacks.

Measuring real rooms

Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles. Measure closets if carpet continues inside. Note doorways and transitions where material stops. For stairs, treat treads and risers with the installer’s method—stair carpet is often estimated separately from floor area.

Measure twice. Wall-to-wall carpet needs the clear floor span, not the exterior building footprint. Baseboards and undercut doors affect fitting but not the geometric area you start from.

Irregular bays: approximate with rectangles and triangles, sum areas in one unit, then convert once. Rounding each polygon before summing can leave you short by a square metre you will notice at the seam.

Square metres ↔ square feet

1 m² ≈ 10.7639 ft². 1 ft² ≈ 0.092903 m². Those factors are squares of the metre–foot length relationship. That is why a “10% longer room” is not a “10% larger carpet order” when you also change width.

US retailers quote ft²; many international and commercial specs use m². Keep a project sheet with both columns. Convert the net area, then apply waste in your working unit, then convert again only if packaging demands it.

Large commercial spaces sometimes mention acres for campuses, not for a single room. One acre is 4,046.8564224 m². Do not use acre converters for a bedroom—use m²/ft².

Waste, pattern match, and roll width

Waste factors of 5–15% are common; patterned carpet can need more for matching. Apply waste after you trust net area. Converting units does not replace waste judgment.

Broadloom rolls have fixed widths. Installers compute cuts from room dimensions and roll width—not from area alone. Still, purchasing starts from credible total area so the quote’s square footage matches your sketch.

Tile and plank sold in boxes list coverage area per box. Divide required area (with waste) by coverage per box in the same unit, then round up whole boxes.

From sketch to order form

Create a line per room: raw L, raw W, unit, net area, waste %, order area, seller unit. Sum order areas. Compare to the installer’s takeoff. Differences larger than a few percent deserve a phone call before payment.

When an overseas seller lists m² and your contractor thinks in ft², send both totals. Dual reporting catches silent conversion errors faster than arguing about a single number.

Use our square metre ↔ square foot converter for the area step and metre ↔ foot for checking individual wall lengths on mixed drawings.

Mistakes that empty the truck

Treating linear metres of skirting like square metres of carpet. Treating roll width as area. Forgetting hallways. Using interior paint-area estimates (which subtract windows) for flooring (which usually should not).

Ordering from room perimeter instead of area. Perimeter helps trim length; it does not equal carpet area.

Updating one dimension after furniture plans change but forgetting to recompute area and reconvert. Build the habit: any geometry change triggers a full pass through the workflow.

よくある質問

How do I convert room m² to ft² for carpet?

Compute area in square metres, then multiply by about 10.7639—or use an area converter. Do not convert only one wall length to feet.

When do I add waste factor?

After you trust net area. Add 5–15% (more for patterns), then convert to the seller’s unit if needed and round up to packaging.

Can I order carpet from length × width in mixed units?

No. Convert lengths into one system first, or convert the finished area with an area converter. Mixed units in the product L × W are invalid.
